Ladies ... One and All
Learning Femininity
If a pedicure on Tuesday, a bikini wax bi-monthly, a trip to the make-up counter for a make-over at the fancy department store down the street just doesn’t sound heavenly to you because you’d rather throw on a pair of sweat pants, eat cheese popcorn, talk with your mouth full and head out to the sports bar to watch some football with the boys to scream profanities at the screen … chances are your ladylike skills may be suffering. Little girls aren’t always made of sugar, spice and everything nice! That's OK. You don't have to give up being "one of the guys" to be ladylike. A lady among the guys will be appreciated and respected. You can still have fun. Just please don't talk with your mouth full of cheese popcorn or fart in public. ;-) Some of us roll with the big boys but that doesn’t mean we’re incapable of ladylike skills, it just means that sometimes we may forget how to act like a lady though that can cause us some embarrassing moments. Learning how to look elegant in that long sensual dress of the season while walking in the heels that look fabulous with the dress when you’d much rather be in a pair of sneakers is no easy task but will power isn’t the key. Ladylike isn’t a bad thing and as with everything good in life, there’s a time and a place.
The basics are pretty ... basic. ;-) Good manners and
grace can sum up acting ladylike more than thousands of words on the subject.
Class, grace and style go a long way in being ladylike. An etiquette book is a
good place to start. I'm not talking about the old fashioned one that condones
not speaking to a man until spoken to first or that a lady never ever utters a
curse word. That's just stupid and impractical in the 21st century. A very
good modern etiquette guide is a girl's or lady's best friend to be
able to gracefully deal with most any situation she finds herself. Table
manners are essential as are social manners when in public and private. When your daughter graduates from middle school, present her with her own copy of Emily Post Guide to Etiquette. And whenever the occasion arises, remind her how to act ladylike. The nagging and harping will prove worth it, I promise, as long as you're kind and respectful when you nag. :-)
