Ladies ... One and All Brought to you by: Rexanne.com Advice and Resources on Being and Raising a Lady Raising little girls to become ladies can be a challenge. I think those who have become parents in the last 20 years or so have found this harder than generations before us. My mother was raised to 'sit like a lady, eat like a lady and act like a lady' at all times. She consequently raised my sister and me to be "proper young ladies." even though the 60s came along and trashed all her best efforts. :-) I'm an admitted "victim of the 60s," When I was a young girl, I rebelled against this "old fashioned" hoopla and thought "young ladies" should be brought up to be "great people" with an emphasis on gender indifference. It only took about 6 months of motherhood before I realized that girls are girls and boys are boys and that girls would benefit by learning to be "ladies," much the same as I believe boys will benefit from learning to be "gentlemen." It's all about manners, poise, consideration for others, grace and dignity. These are qualities I think all parents want for their children, if not for themselves. Both my daughters started ballet lessons at 2 years of age because I learned from personal experience that dance training, especially ballet, instills poise and grace very effectively. They were taught to be ladies and to act like ladies when circumstances arose and where they needed to. My rationale was that if my girls were ever invited to eat at the Queen's table, they would know how to behave, feel comfortable and be at ease. My younger, very practical daughter argued that she probably wouldn't ever be eating with the Queen, we were Americans, geeeeeeeeeeeeze Mom! It seemed like such nonsense to her. My retort? "No matter where you go, you will always feel comfortable because you have good manners and poise and you will instinctually know how to behave in all circumstances. You will be naturally gracious which will make your life much easier." I know from experience that having been brought up to act, walk, speak, behave and feel like a lady has benefited me tremendously. I insist that my daughters learn the essentials of being ladies. When they've grown and left home, they're on their own and can take it or leave it. I suspect they will be grateful they were "forced" to learn manners and how to be a graceful lady, just as I was taught and for which I am now grateful. I can already see how my older daughter (now 17) has a distinct advantage over other girls her age because of the "training" she's been instilled with from birth by "Mom the ladylike freak." Throughout this site, there are articles and guides explaining the importance of being all the lady you can be, the 'art' of femininity and how to accomplish the valuable task of being and acting like a true lady. Some of the content on this site is from the amazing new program, UDefineU, an online course designed to walk you through the steps to becoming the very best lady you can be or help your daughter to become ladylike. This is equally good for women as it is for young ladies wanting to learn grace, class and style and I highly recommend it. My daughters study this course regularly and I consider it a valuable addition to their general education. I'm eagerly awaiting a UDefineU series for boys and men to help you raise the ultimate gentleman! For now, there is a good guide in the book How to Raise a Gentleman, by Kay West. Moms, I'm struggling to raise ladies for your boys, please do your part and raise gentlemen for my girls. ;-) Teaching our daughters and sons the art of being gracious, well-mannered, dignified and considerate human beings is, in my opinion, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children. They will have an easier life, secure better jobs, be better liked by everyone they encounter and they will have the confidence of being able to interact effortlessly in any social situation. If you need a brush up course on being ladylike, then by all means, browse the pages of this site and do check out UDefineU, the new and amazing tool to help you or your daughters be and become the best ladies you can be.
