I've compiled all the tips & tricks from our newsletters over the years into one
area. While at it, I created a specific section on my site for easy access to
all the help pages. You'll find the tips & tricks site on this page, plus a few
others that have gotten buried in the newsletter archives:

Anne B. wrote about our parents educating children topic from last month:
"I think it's crucial that we verbalize what we're teaching, not just set an
example. I think it's crucial that we make our moral and ethical positions clear
verbally, as well as by our actions. If you're given too much change and you
hand it back, it's a great teaching moment: "Sammy, see what happened? I could
have kept that dollar, but it wasn't MY dollar to keep, so I gave it back." I
think this applies all over the grid: from when they're toddlers to adults: If
James hears me be rude to a telemarketer, I'm going to explain why I think what
I said was OK. And maybe it wasn't OK, and I need to explain that too. He knows,
with utter certainty, how I feel about lies, white lies, half-truths, when
they're appropriate and when they're not; because we TALKED about them, not just
that he observed me."
Excellent input, Anne. As always, you're a step ahead and I appreciate you
tremendously!

And Johanna is thankfully on top of Internet hoaxes:
"LOL The tidbit about unlocking your car is a hoax."
Grrrrrrrrrrr - I am so sorry to have passed on a hoax in last month's tips
section - Please forgive me! It wasn't something that seemed as if I needed to
run it through the scam filter before I posted it. For further reference on this
one, see: Car Keys Hoax

OK, here's the scoop:

Quote of the Month: When a resolute young fellow
steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is
often surprised to find it comes off in his hand and that it was only tied on to
scare away the timid adventurers. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Parenting & Family Topic of the Month:
Bullies &
Bullying
I'm experimenting this month with creating discussions with all of you on the
monthly topics of our newsletter. Each month, I will change the monthly topic on
our forum to the topic in our newsletter which will give you all a chance to
contribute, ask a specific question about the topic or bring up a point about
each issue that you feel would be beneficial to discuss and even debate if you
feel strongly about it.
It's been difficult to integrate you all into the forum. I'm not sure why ... I
thought you would all like a place to interact and have a voice. This month,
please visit the forum and add your input to the topic of the month. I will
leave the topic of bullies and bullying up for the month of October and change
it to reflect November's topic of the month. I think you will all enjoy being
able to openly and actively discuss each topic and your ideas for new topics are
always welcome.
Please speak your mind freely and share your opinions. While the forum is
moderated to keep creeps and spammers out, it is also a very tolerant and
supportive environment. I truly believe that open discussion is a great educator
and we can all learn from each other to be the best parents we can be.

Time Waster of the Month:
Human Senses
(Because life is supposed to be fun!)

Featured Site of the Month:
Dogs Deserve
Better
Martha sent this and it broke my heart but I feel it's important to spread the
word about protecting animals almost (if not) as much as children:
Let's make some noise on this one!

Personalized Candy Bars
I absolutely love this idea for Halloween - hand out personalized candy bars,
with your name (or your child's name) and personal greeting on the wrappers!
Parents will be especially happy to know where the candy came from, kids will
remember you very kindly for years because you're giving them chocolate (what
they really want)! It doesn't get any better.
