WELCOME ALL NEWCOMERS!
Geesh ... it's almost Memorial Day! Where do the days fly to? Anyone have plans for the big weekend? I'm sure those barbecues will be fired up and ready to smoke. I suppose this means summer is upon us. OMG! Hey, remember the sunscreen! ;-)
I've found some super barbecue pages for anyone wishing to get creative over the coals this holiday. Look in the FOOD & COOKING section of the newsletter. Also, some great side dishes to go with. Enjoy being outside ... especially my readers in cold country!
Don't have a Memorial Site for you all to explore but Father's Day is rapidly closing in on us! Here's a link to my full-service Father's Day site: Rexanne's Father's Day - Cards, graphics, food sites, kid sites, gifts galore and tons of links!

Reader's Comments:
Reader Sandy sent a heartbreaking email about her dear dog, Gum. Seems Gum was prescribed a drug for arthritis that has deadly side effects NOT mentioned by vets who prescribe it routinely. If you have a dog, please visit this site to learn about the dangers of Rimadyl: The Senior Dogs Project
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reader Elaine had some great advice and comments about bed wetting:
"I was so pleased to read the article on bed wetting you recommended by Dr. Greene. Thank you for steering parents in the right direction regarding the cause of most bedwetting ... One word of advice for parents who are going through this with their children: please don't ever shame them, they are ashamed enough and this is totally out of their control. No amount of wishing or trying will keep them dry through the night."
Also from Elaine on the difference between potty training boys and girls:
"In answer to your question about potty-training boys and girls: I have one of each and, in my experience, compared to my son, my daughter was a dream to potty-train."
Thank you, Elaine! Your suggestions and input are always welcome!
Parenting & Family Link(s) of the Week: Our Children and Food
Our Children and Food
By Rexanne Mancini
With all this talk of barbecue, let's explore our children's eating and food consumption. I think we all worry that our kids aren't eating properly. A hamburger or hot dog will usually bring a smile to an otherwise "not hungry" child but let's face it ... burgers and dogs are junk food. OK once in a while but not the best diet for growing bodies. It's all well and good to be concerned about our kid's diet, but too much emphasis on their nutritional intake or lack thereof will make everyone in the house nuts, especially you.
I do not force my kids to eat anything they find unappealing. I do not make them finish what's on their plates. If they eat a reasonable amount of "real" food, I let them have the coveted dessert. They get to pick a really nasty sugared cereal at the market once a month or so and we all worship chocolate without shame! LOL! Seems to work. They eat veggies, salads, fruit, sushi, Greek, gourmet and anything else that doesn't resemble a head or eyeballs. They have also been dragged to fancy restaurants from early infancy and know how to behave at a table other than the one in our dining room. This is another of my issues ... I'll leave it for another newsletter! ;-)
Denying food as a discipline tactic or forcing children to consume undesirable fare is a recipe for disaster. This will plant the seeds of eating disorders and cause many more problems down the line. Moderation, adequate intake of healthful, fresh foods and a spirit of adventure while feeding our kids seems to be a good rule to live by.
This first link is to an article entitled "What are We Feeding Our Kids?" There is a list of the worst and best foods we can offer our munchkins that might shock you. It floored me! Everything I've considered harmless junk food is on the list of worst foods! The list of best foods is pretty easy, not a major nutritional lecture. But this will give you some important guidelines. The rest of the article deals with our national statistics. Pretty revealing ... Feeding Our Kids
The next article is not as fear-inducing! Although it does deal with eating problems in children, there is sensible, non-alarmist advice for a calm and rational approach to helping our kids jump the hurdle of food and diet: Eating Problems
Yes, Kidtastic is a fantastic place for kids of all ages! There are many well-designed online games; an art room where children can color, draw and create masterpieces; a music section where kids can play instruments and learn about music; a school section for homework help and reference; a computer section filled with great downloads and computer help; the apartment section where kids can learn about other kids from all over the world; a museum, a movie theater, etc., etc., etc.!
There is also a parent's section with terrific articles, advice and discussion boards so do take time to browse before setting the kids loose in here!
Kidtastic is extensive and brilliantly laid out. Children will return over and over to play a favorite game, watch a movie or color an online picture. Think you can give up the computer this long? ;-)
Tip or Trick of the Week
"Organize That Linen Closet!"
Found these super tips on Cybermom.com
"Roll towels before putting them in the linen closet. They take up much less room that way! As for sheets, put the fitted sheet, top sheet, and one pillowcase all into the other pillowcase of each set. Seem to take up less room, are neater, and far more convenient than searching through the pile to find the matching set."
Sounds good to me!
Weekly Time Waster:
(Because life is supposed to be fun!)
Did you ever wonder what it would be like to throw pots? I know I have. I suspect it has something to do with that scene in the movie "GHOST" with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze ... ;-) Well, at VirtualHands On, you can create a work of art without even getting your hands sticky! Very fun and gives you the feel of the clay without the reality! Also see what it's like to fire up a kiln, dry mix cement (?!) and draw with any number of weapons on the chalkboard.
Have fun ... feed the kids first.
Featured Home Page of the Week: Some Gave All
Monday is Memorial Day. Yep, barbecues, picnics and the first swim parties of the season. But the true meaning of Memorial Day is to honor our fallen soldiers. Men and, in some cases, boys who gave their lives to protect our rights, freedom and our flag.
Reader Tommy has created a beautiful and touching page for Memorial Day ... honoring our fallen soldiers and the men who protect our freedom and honor today. With gorgeous graphics and a heartfelt song by Billy Ray Cyrus to help deliver the message, this page speaks volumes about our brave men.
On this page you will find "The Sentinel's Creed," which is the pledge of the men guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Says a lot about us as a people and it makes me proud to be an American!
Thank you, Tommy!
