Kathy wrote about last week's topic, Febrile
Seizures:
"My 2 year old son had a febrile seizure and to say
it was horrifying is actually an understatement. In reading all the articles
on this occurrence, most do say to let the seizure run its course, however,
my baby was not breathing and was turning a dark inky blue. I had to call 911 and give my son mouth to mouth while waiting on the ambulance.
We've
had no family history of these seizures. I think it's important for parents
to be prepared should this ever happen. It was absolutely the scariest thing
that's ever happened to me as a mom."

"My daughter had a febrile seizure when she was 15
months old. It was very frightening. Luckily, I knew what it was and reacted
accordingly without panicking. I also had a 3 y.o. who saw the whole thing
and I had to keep calm so he wouldn't get scared. I just laid her on the changing table with her head to the side.
As you said, knowledge is power and will help you get
through this. Luckily we didn't go through this again. (Yet ... as she is
only 2.5 y.o.) My advice to parents is read all you can on anything that can
happen to children so you are ready if something happens."

"I work with people with disABILITIES, and quite a
few of them have seizures. A different type, I am sure, but my heart goes
out to any parent who has a child who experiences seizures. They can be very traumatic, especially for the one who is watching them, as well as the
one who is going through them. Even though I have worked around this for
3 years, my heart still breaks when I see one of my clients going through a
seizure."

diamonds off my screen and other equally fascinating games. Good thing my

Parenting & Family Topic of the Week:
Back
Talk
There is one thing that I think irks parents more
than most issues ... back talk. It certainly drives me crazy. Children are
pretty much at their worst when they're mouthing off. True back-talking
begins somewhere around 8 or 9 if a child is precocious. Most kids are full-fledged mouths by age 11. If they only knew how close they were
to
real punishment! LOL!
I wish I had a magic answer for you. I wish my
older daughter didn't become the mouth from hell at various times, forcing me to exhaust the lectures and take away her precious phone
privileges. If the back talk doesn't stop, TV viewing is curtains for the rest of the
day. Thankfully, it has never escalated beyond that. You may not be so lucky. If you're raising the next debate master of the century, you
might just have a child who could talk circles around you at which point
you are at a disadvantage.
When our kids back talk, our first reaction might
be to lash out and react as poorly as they are acting. This is one of those
times when we need to maintain our parental cool, remember that it is WE who
are the adults and take appropriate action.
I recently read a few excellent tips on mastering
back talk written by Dr. William Walker, Jr. This first link will take you
to a brief article with good advice on dealing with back talk: Back Talk
This next link is a follow-up to the first article
by Dr. Walker, explaining how to counter children's lip with the:

Tip or Trick of the Week:
Reader's
Tips
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lorraine sent us this terrific tip:
"To remove permanent marker stains from counter
tops (kid's markers, stains from market receipts) soak a small section of
paper towel with rubbing alcohol and
wipe."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aria sent another winner:
"To help keep fresh bread and rolls warm on the
table, add a folded piece of aluminum foil under the napkin in your serving
container."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And Melanie sent in her mother's secret
tip:
"Before screwing in a new light bulb, apply a light
coat of petroleum jelly to the grooves. Bulbs won't stick or break off when
later removing them."
Weekly Time Waster: Comics.com
Because life is
supposed to be fun!
This site could seriously put a dent in your day
... I spent way too much time reading comic strips of characters I love,
finding new ones I didn't know existed which are now a part of my life and
giggling until I couldn't giggle no more! Fun, silly and always insightful, comic strips allow us to laugh at our weaknesses and feel connected
with
the rest of the best of them.
The drop down menu at the top of the page will give
you a long list of featured comic strips to browse. To the left, at the top,
are a few I hadn't heard of but fell in love with. Enjoy this entire site
but be forewarned ... it WILL consume a good part of your day!
