Maggie sent this important warning about a tip in the last issue:
"Putting perfume on a light bulb is a great idea. The light bulb MUST be off and cool when this is done, otherwise the bulb will explode and
glass will fly. This happened to me. Glass flew up into my face."
Yikes! This is very good to know, Maggie. Thank you for the warning!

"I was advised by our pediatrician to let my four month-old daughter "cry it out" when she wakes up at night. He said it would
make her figure out a good sleep pattern. It hurts me to hear her cry for up to 20 minutes. When I read your newsletter today, I decided to
never let her cry it out again. It never seemed right and I don't think babies that young should be left to cry, either."
Annette, it breaks my heart to know your baby was left to cry on the advice of a pediatrician. Sadly, many doctors give this advice daily.
I just can't figure out how they think this is humane or good.

Cathy has a question for us:
"Hi All. In order to teach my young daughters the ins and outs of money, I'm planning for us to make and sell crafts at local community
get togethers. What are some easy, popular crafts that always sell well? Thanks."
OK readers, I know you will come through for Cathy. Anyone with ANY ideas, please help Cathy figure this out. You can email her directly:

Congratulations on your new Grandma status, Rexanna! Zoe is going to be one spoiled little girl, I suspect. :-)

Parenting & Family Topic of the Week: Cry Babies
Cry Babies
By Rexanne Mancini
My younger daughter, at seven, still breaks into pitiful tears on a daily basis. Reasons range from slights by her older sister, not being
given sugared cereal for dinner to not being understood when she runs into my office blabbering gibberish. Sure, it drives me a little crazy.
More like a lot crazy at times. Is she a cry baby? You bet! Is there something wrong with her? I certainly hope not.
While children have little control over their everyday lives, they need to learn how to control their reactions to the unfairness that
life can dish out. When my daughter wilts into tears over something I consider minor, I have to pull back for a moment, realize she is
feeling vulnerable and is not able to express her frustrations in what I consider a rational manner. Calling her a cry baby or ignoring her
until she can express her anger or hurt in a more appropriate way is mostly counterproductive. Appropriate to me is not the same as
appropriate to her. At these times, I try to explain gently that a better way to cope with her anguish would be to use her words or try
to change the way her mind sees the situation to avoid having her feelings crushed. Sometimes this works, other times not. She will grow
out of this phase, hopefully before her self-esteem takes a nose dive from peer pressure and adult ridicule.
Older-child crying can be attributed to frustration and extreme sensitivity. Being a sensitive child is a positive characteristic once
these touchy kids learn to deal with the sometimes cruel reality of life. Children have not yet learned the coping skills most adults have.
We need to teach them that life's problems can be dealt with by words and actions rather than by crying from feelings of helplessness.
Sometimes, we need to just listen, let them vent and not offer a grown up solution. Allowing kids to blow off steam and rage can work wonders
when constant advice doesn't seem to work. At times, kids just need to be heard and understood. They might find their own solutions if they
feel safe enough to express themselves, however irrational it appears to us or others around us.
The first link is to a question/answer article with very sage advice about the sensitive child:

& Fearful Child
This next article, about children and crying, is very insightful and has great merit in understanding children's frustrations:

Another excellent article: Helping Children Resolve Emotional
Hurts
And just in case this applies, here is a good article on criticism and how it can affect our children:

Does anyone have a story or advice about older children who cry a lot? Let's hear from you!

Food & Cooking Site of the Week: Pagan
Table Newsgroup
Technically, this is not a food site but it is a super food and cooking newsletter filled with awesome recipes from easy to exquisitely
challenging. All culinary taste treats, I assure you! Here is a recipe from Pagan Table that my kids love:
Kid's Favorite Biscuits
1 tube (7 1/2 oz) refrigerated buttermilk biscuits (10 biscuits)
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup jelly
Separate biscuits; pat onto the bottom and up the sides of greased muffin cups. In a small bowl, combine peanut butter and jelly until
smooth; place a rounded tablespoonful into each biscuit cup. Bake at 450 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. Yields 10 servings.
One note from this cook: Don't fill the cups too full of the PB & J mix or they will overflow as they cook. Otherwise, they're awesome!
If this sounds yummy to you (or to your kids) sign up today for Pagan Table's weekly newsletter and reap the rewards of a super online food
and cooking magazine: Subscribe
to Pagan Table
Bon Appetit!

Kid's Site of the Week: PBS
Kid's Democracy Project
PBS Kid's Democracy Project is a site where children can delve into the workings of democracy, the
White House and how the United States
government works.
Clicking on various government buildings will show how the government affects their everyday life or they can see what the inside of a voting
booth looks like. The feature, President for a Day, allows kids the
opportunity to see what being the leader of the United States is like, complete with a morning swim or round of golf, meetings with foreign
officials or the members of the White House staff. They'll be in good company ... each new page provides information and pictures of various
past presidents, their habits, issues they dealt with in their white house years and personal tidbits.
This is a fun, educational site. Parents will want to take a tour of PBS Kid's Democracy
Project, too. You'll be surprised at the things you don't know! For children outside the U.S., this is a good way to
learn how other governments function.

Tip or Trick of the Week:
Picture Hanging Tip
"Before hanging your favorite framed pictures on a wall, spread them out on a large table or on the floor. Then, arrange them the way you'd
like them to appear on your wall. Carefully mark your wall with pencil dots, so they can be erased if there's an error, then hang your pictures."
