Welcome All Newcomers!

And welcome back longtime subscribers. I've missed you and it's good to be publishing again after six long weeks! This was one of the fastest moving summers yet. So much to do and so many events ... I'm looking forward to school starting and regaining some sense of a schedule. Labor Day, September 5, is the last summer fling here in the U.S. Hope everyone has a good celebration. Enjoy!

Grandparent's Day is September 9 this year. Please visit our sponsor, Gold Violin, for the most amazing selection of gifts for seniors. Not only are they beautiful, they are practical. Grandma and Grandpa would
love a gift from Gold Violin. I wish all our wonderful readers who are grandparents a very Happy Grandparent's Day!

And please check out Martha's new page, Firecracker Dog. While it is disturbing, our four-legged friends need help to overcome human idiocy and cruelty. You'll find my take on what to do at the first signs of animal abuse by children about midway through the page.

Reader's Comments:

Deanna wrote about our topic from the last issue, stuttering:

"I have a cousin who stuttered. Since you stated that there is really no definite theory for stuttering, this really made me think. He had an older sister, who was very beautiful and very intelligent. He heard this all the time, from his parents, his relatives, friends and I am sure his teachers. I remember hearing, as a child, that it was too bad his sister was so smart and he wasn't. In his case his stuttering could have very possibly been physiological. This is another example of how parents have to be so careful in not judging one child's capabilities against another's."

I, too, feel that many children with speech or other impediments, are suffering emotional trauma, Deanna. Thank you for sharing this with us!

Martha wrote:

"The ex stuttered. We never zeroed in on what set him off in normal conversation. Interesting though, when the salesman went into his pitch, he never missed a beat. Just like Mel Tillis singing I guess."

Johanna sent this:

"Since your newsletter probably reaches hundreds of people I thought this could make a difference in just one of these kids' short lives. Grab a tissue." Make A Child Smile

And Marsha wrote:

"The people who make Holy Bears (beanies) have agreed to donate 1/2 the cost of each bear that we can sell to the sick children of the Hugs and Hope Club! I'm hoping that you will refer your readers to my page about the bears. If you can help spread the word, it would benefit our 'club kids' and I would greatly appreciate it."

Parenting & Family Topic of the Week:  Honoring Grandparents

Honoring Grandparents
By Rexanne Mancini

Grandparents can be the best form of super glue, holding our families together, bringing us home for holidays, celebrations and family dinners. If ours has become the family home, a grandparent's visit adds
a measure of warmth and love to the festivities. They are the wise, the gentle and the brave. Our children admire and trust them for the grown ups they are, not the parents they once were. If we are lucky enough to have our own grandparents still living, we feel comfort from their presence as surely as we feel comfort from our parent's company. Yes, there are the exceptions, however most grandparents are treasures to adore and cherish.

Grandparents are usually the ones to pass on family traditions, stories and lore ... the link to our heritage. Stories of their ancestors and tales of their parent's childhood fascinate children. Grandparents can
bring a tremendous amount of stability to their grandchildren with these stories, their loving deeds and kindness. They are also our strength when life is harsh, sheltering us as grown children or lending
a sympathetic ear to a sad and lonely adolescent.

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. This year we will celebrate on September 9. Why not make this day the beginning of a lovely yearlong tradition? Offer the gift of a weekly or monthly night with the family whether you go to your favorite restaurant (or theirs) or have a casual dinner at home. The gift of our company is most likely the greatest present we can offer grandparents. Listening to their stories would come a close second.

Here are a few excellent web sites for and about grandparents:

And a wonderful page full of grandparent poetry, verses and quotes:

Food & Cooking Site of the Week: Recipes From the Past

Recipes from the Past is a super site with more than 500 recipes for everything you could ever imagine cooking. You're bound to find a treasured old favorite from your childhood. I was amazed to see a recipe for the Spiced Pumpkin Fudge my aunt used to make.

There are also recipes from famous restaurants and other food establishments lurking with the old time favorites. Especially noteworthy is the Olive Garden 5-Cheese Lasagna and the International House of Coffee Flavored Coffees recipes. These are easy to store in containers. Invite the grandparents over for a cup and send them home with a pretty, labeled container of their favorite one. :-)

Bon Appetit!

Kid's Site of the Week: The Ultimate Grandparent

Between the years 1920 and 1927, Sir Henry Thornhill was living in India as a soldier and administrator. He missed his grandchildren terribly, not knowing if they would remember him upon his ultimate return to England. He began to send them illustrated post cards, capturing the beauty and experiences he lived daily and eventually, entwining imaginary characters into the letters. In a cruel twist of fate, when Sir Henry was finally sent home to his beloved England, the children, who had come to love him through his letters and cards, moved to India with their father and mother. The letters and stories were Sir Henry's only way of reaching out and maintaining a relationship with his precious family.

This is an amazing site, with blasts from the past to rival none. Children today can imagine living in astounding India in the 20s through Sir Henry's experiences and tales, read online by his great grandson, Charles or they can read the stories and letters themselves.

Tip or Trick of the Week:
Reader's Tips

Thanks to everyone who kept the tips and tricks coming these past six weeks. We have some dandies! :-)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Claire sent this one:
"Put a plastic sandwich bag over your hand to grease pans and then just throw it away."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Donna wrote:

"To avoid the soil run-off from potted plants, place a coffee filter in the bottom of the pot before planting. This will allow drainage and keep the potting soil in place."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sandy sent this good dessert decorating tip:
"A squeezable mustard bottle works very well for decorating cakes, cookies or any frosted dessert. Fill the clean bottle with the icing, replace the top and decorate."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And Margie wrote:

"I use baby wipes to clean just about everything besides my 2 year-old son. I've been known to wipe stains off his changing table, then turn around with the same cloth and wipe the smear marks off his dresser. I also use them to wipe off his sneakers and better shoes, toys and a lot more. I keep some in the car for fast food messes and emergencies."
