Welcome All Newcomers!

Big news here ... we got a puppy! Does everyone know why there are three Ps in puppy? LOL! Dang, my house reeks. Ah well, Frankie is worth the momentary stench. He's a darling mini Dachshund. After
featuring Weiner Dog Races as the time waster of the month in a past issue of our newsletter, I just couldn't resist when a rescue doxie fell in my lap. I'll have Frankie's web page up soon and yes, I will share it with you all. :-)

Happy Mother's Day on May 12 to all our moms, grandmas, step-moms, surrogate mothers and any other person who qualifies. You are all amazing and performing miracles daily. Last chance to find all the best Web goodies on my Mother's Day site here: Rexanne's Mother's Day

We have a great sponsor for this newsletter, PC Flowers.com. They are the best and most reliable florist online and ship internationally. Do send Mom flowers! She deserves them and more. We also have terrific advertisers for perfect Mother's Day presents. Check the bottom of the newsletter to visit these online stores. Especially noteworthy is GreatArrivals Gift Baskets. There's still time to order for Mother's Day, but hurry!

And please remember your child's teacher during teacher appreciation week, May 5 through May 11 with a flower from your garden, a sincere note from you and/or your child, a box of chocolates or any thoughtful favor. One thing I know ... teachers have more than a million mugs, apple ornaments, pens, etc. Food is always thoughtful ... they can share it with their family. A gift certificate is nice, too. Teachers are terrific. Let  them know we appreciate all they do for our kids.

Reader's Comments:

Elaine wrote about our topic of teenagers from last month:

"I enjoyed your article on teenagers. I just wanted to recommend a book which my 17 year old daughter says really helps her keep things in perspective. It's called 'Don't Sweat the Small Stuff for Teens' by Richard Carlson. She has taken it out of the library at least four times and is asking for a copy for her birthday."

Thanks for your kind words and book recommendation, Elaine. I just ordered this book for my daughter. The reviews are fantastic and I believe all teenagers need this type of relaxed support. Readers, you
can find this book here: Don't Sweat the Small Stuff

Veronica wrote:

"I subscribed to your newsletter almost from the beginning, maybe about 3 years ago? I have two daughters as well and I also just had a baby in November, a BOY. My hands are pretty full these days! I did want to comment regarding you having a teenager and what it means for them to be heard, etc. I will be looking forward to reading your developments with your daughter in High School. I still read your newsletter every chance I get!"

Thanks, Veronica. :-)

Kath wrote about head lice:

"I just read your article on the head lice ordeal. THE shampoo to get is Lindane. You have to get a prescription for it. Lindane is a one time ordeal. Its sticky, thick and nasty but works!"

As disgusting as the topic of head lice is, any remedy that actually works is always welcome. Thank you, Kath!

Parenting & Family Topic of the Month:  Mom Quotes

I've already written my piece on the importance of mothers two years ago. Not much has changed since then. :-) You can read this article online here: The Importance of Mothers

This year, I've decided to fill our topic of the month with quotes on mothers. There are so many excellent ones that say it all perfectly. You'll find profound quotes, loving sentiments, quotes that will make you think and some will make you giggle. All are tributes to the very foundation of our world ... the incomparable mother.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) "Mothers have as powerful an influence over the welfare of future generations as all other earthly causes combined." - John S.C. Abbott
2) "If you bungle raising your children, I don't think whatever else you do well matters very much." - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
3) "Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother." - Lin Yutang
4) "The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world." - W. R. Wallace
5) "Before becoming a mother I had a hundred theories on how to bring up children. Now I have seven children and only one theory: love them, especially when they least deserve to be loved." - Kate Samperi
6) "Education commences at the mother's knee, and every word spoken within the hearing of little children tends towards the formation of character." - Hosea Ballou
7) "Motherhood brings as much joy as ever but it still brings boredom, exhaustion, and sorrow too. Nothing else ever will make you as happy or as sad, as proud or as tired, for nothing is quite as hard as helping a person develop his own individuality especially while you struggle to keep your own." - Marguerite Kelly and Elia Parsons
8) "Any mother could perform the jobs of several air-traffic controllers with ease." - Lisa Alther
9) "The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother." - Theodore M. Hesburgh
10) "Every mother is like Moses. She does not enter the promised land. She prepares a world she will not see." - Pope Paul VI
11) "The commonest fallacy among women is that simply having children makes one a mother, which is as absurd as believing that having a piano makes one a musician." - Sydney Harris
12) "Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws." - Barbara Kingsolver
13) "The mother, more than any other, affects the moral and spiritual part of the children’s character. She is their constant companion and teacher in formative years. The child is ever imitating and assimilating the mother’s nature. It is only in after life that men gaze backward and behold how a mother’s hand and heart of love molded their young lives and shaped their destiny." - E.W. Caswell
14) "The future destiny of a child is always the work of the mother." - Napoleon Bonaparte
15) "What the world needs is not romantic lovers who are sufficient unto themselves, but husbands and wives who live in communities, relate to other people, carry on useful work and willingly give time and attention to their children." - Margaret Mead
16) "My mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier you'll be a general; if you become a monk you'll end up as the pope.' Instead, I became a painter and wound up as Picasso." - Pablo Picasso
17) "By and large, mothers and housewives are the only workers who do not have regular time off. They are the great vacationless class." - Anne Morrow Lindbergh
18) "Mama exhorted her children at every opportunity to 'jump at de sun.' We might not land on the sun, but at least we would get off the ground." - Zora Neale Hurston
19) "The mother is the most precious possession of the nation, so precious that society advances its highest well-being when it protects the functions of the mother." - Ellen Key
20) "I’d like to be the ideal mother but I’m too busy raising my kids." - Unknown
Tip or Trick of the Month:  Reader's Tips
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mattress Care

Elaine sent in this excellent tip:

"Spin all your mattresses around! Daylight savings time is a good reminder of when to do this. Remember to SPIN in the spring and FLIP in the fall."

I am spinning now, Elaine. Thank you for sharing!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Laundry Basket
Janine sent this tip:
"I always keep a spare laundry basket in the trunk of my car for storing grocery bags and purchases. The bags stay put and I can just lift the basket out and bring it in the house when I'm done shopping."
I love this tip, Janine. Thank you!
This Month's Time Waster: Odd Animal Combinations
Because life is supposed to be fun!
Living with a new dog who desperately wants to make friends with our scornful cats is chaotic. Evidently, it doesn't have to be this way! Odd Animal Combinations offers just such evidence. Want to see a
mother hen cuddling newborn kittens or marvel at the friendship between a lion and a tiny mouse? You'll find photographs of some very odd combinations indeed. Share this site with the family or remember to ...
Feed the kids first.
Featured Site of the Month:  Michael Jurogue Johnson
The art of Michael Jurogue Johnson is enriching, soulful and filled with small and large wonders. Whether he is capturing the frolicking of dogs, the casual elegance of cats or the essence of brightly colored flowers, his art work is spectacular in its simplicity. That Michael was born with Down's Syndrome seems to sweeten his work with an innocence that borders on pure love. Michael Jurogue Johnson's paintings are an inspiration.
