Welcome All Newcomers!

It's summer vacation around here. We've been lazy little bugs and sleeping late. This is heaven. :-) I also love having my kids around all day when they're not running off with friends. Mom is about to take her yearly vacation from the computer, too. The next issue of Rexanne's Web Review will be published September 1, 2002. Gives me a chance to regroup, enjoy my visiting family members and return fresh and ready to take on another year as your faithful editor. :-) Enjoy the rest of the summer and remember to have fun!

Did all parents of school-age children download their free copy of bully free tips from our sponsor last month? These tips are well worth reading, easy to implement and doable! If you didn't take advantage of
this great offer, you can still download them for free here: Bully Free Tips

And yes, Frankie still has pee-pee issues. *sigh*

Happy Fourth of July to all American readers!

"I loved the Father's Day quotes. So many of them remind me of my Dad, who I miss so much, but they also remind me of my son and son-in-laws, who are all GREAT Dads."

To all readers who requested and thanked me for the teacher appreciation documents I sent, you are very welcome! Here is one reader's comment about them:

Daysi wrote:

"What a great tribute to teachers! Last year I did a photo album for my daughter's kindergarten teacher. She was crying when she saw all the kid's pictures. I decided to do it again with my Blaise's first grade teacher. I know she will LOVE it as well! I would love to print this tribute to her and add it to her book."

Terry wrote:

"I have two bits of opinion to offer about college age kids. One is that college-age young adults value homemade over anything store-bought when it is given to them by their parents. A parent could buy and send the finest cookies available but the package will not mean nearly as much as a batch of cookies made from scratch by Mom (or Dad). The second is that college students still want Mom and Dad to come to see their shows (even though they may not say so)."

Excellent advice, Terry. Thank you!

"I have started a new organization called Speak Up For Kids."

I signed up as a charter member of Speak Up for Kids immediately. Please visit this excellent site and sign up, too. It's free, no obligations and will assist in the safety and benefit of all our children.

And Sue wrote, regarding my mention of an upcoming article on children's vaccinations:

"I heard a report on TV that said some of the medicine used in children's vaccinations had mercury in them. Mercury can cause autism and has other side affects. The mercury is used to preserve the medicine. Mercury is not put in the new medicine but some of it still exists. Please advise parents to ask their physician to be sure that their vaccinations are mercury free."

OK, here's the scoop:

Parenting & Family Topic of the Month:  Children Patriots

Children Patriots
by Rexanne Mancini

This year will be an especially poignant Independence Day for the United States on July 4. While there has been a surge in patriotism since September 11, we all need to maintain a sense of pride and love for our country whether we are at war or living in peace.

Children need to feel a sense of belonging, in their family, their classrooms and their country. They thrive in an environment of respect, compassion and stability. If we teach our kids love, honor, compassion and respect for their country as well as for their fellow man, they will not only be graced by a sense of patriotism, they will become better citizens. One of our greatest challenges as parents is to raise our children to be healthy, honorable adults. A sense of patriotism is a good reinforcement of honor and ethics.

Our babies learn kindness from our gentle touch; they learn healthy self-esteem by our praise and respect; they learn to maintain their precious bodies with good food and regular exercise. They learn these living examples from their caretakers and schools. We are also responsible for teaching them to respect and be kind to others, to keep their community clean and to trust that their country will defend and protect them as best it can. I firmly believe they should be taught to revere their country's flag and all it stands for.   My  children have already been told that, while it might be legal to burn the stars and stripes as an expression of individual freedom, they would be hard-pressed to get past Mom if they ever entertained the idea!

Children need to know they are a very large and integral part of their country's make up. They are the future parents and government that will uphold the morals and ethics inherited from these same entities. Is it too much to ask that our children be patriotic, honor their flag and stand up for what's right and good about their country? I don't think so. It is our job to instill a sense of patriotism in their young hearts, offering them the opportunity to love and honor their country and its flag. In doing so, these same feelings will transfer to mankind and the world. As much as we want our children to love their country, we also need to recognize the importance of global relationships. Setting good examples of patriotism should, in turn, teach our kids that every person counts, no matter where they live or who they might be.

An excellent article on teaching children patriotism can be found on the Partnership for Learning site here:
Teaching Children Patriotism

Food & Cooking Site of the Month: Ol' Buffalo Camp Cookbook

From our Food & Cooking Editor, Martha Jones, AKA Queen Can-ivore:

"Concentrating on easy-to-prepare meals for the outdoors. It is written with a group of 6-8 youth in mind and provides a variety of tasty, nutritious dishes for the beginning camper as well as for the old-timer."

That description doesn't even begin to make a dent in this site. I don't believe I've ever seen as many links for any other cooking specialty subject. That's not counting all the rest for camping-related, and ... well ... almost everything else under the sun, you name it!

Tip or Trick of the Month:  Fireworks Safety & First Aid

To help you celebrate safely this Fourth of July the National Council on Fireworks Safety offers the
following safety tips:

1) Always read and follow label directions.

2) Have an adult present.

3) Buy from reliable sellers.

4) Use outdoors only.

5) Always have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket).

6) Never experiment or make your own fireworks.

7) Light only one firework at a time.

8) Never re-light a "dud" firework. Wait 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

9) Never give fireworks to small children.

10) If necessary, store fireworks in a cool, dry place.

11) Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then disposing of them in your trash can.

12) Never throw or point fireworks at other people. Never carry fireworks in your pocket.

13) Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.

14) The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework.

15) Stay away from illegal explosives.

This Month's Time Waster: Lemonade Game
Because life is supposed to be fun!

Oh boy ... this one had me going for hours. The object of Lemonade Game is to run a lemonade stand business for a month and make it profitable. You decide how many cups to buy, how many ice cubes per
cup, the amount of supplies you'll need to get you through the day and you have the pleasure of guessing what the weather will be. Kinda gives you a new appreciation for our poor weather forecasters. ;-) This is a great game to pass on to the older kids when you've had enough. Good luck and have fun!

Feed the kids first ...

Featured Site of the Month:  July 4th - America

This page makes me want to stand up and salute our flag. It also brings tears to my eyes.

Deanna has created a gorgeous, touching page around an amazing rendition of the song America the Beautiful and her niece just happens to be in the orchestra. Read the story of the band, enjoy the page and
capture the sentiment here.
