Reader's Comments:

As expected, I received plenty of feedback about the article "Never Hit a Child" from last month's newsletter:

Thank you all for your responses and for taking the time to share your thoughts. Here are a few that argue the opposite viewpoint:

---

Mary Jane wrote:

"I am 65 years old and I have two Daughters 38 and 35, both brought up with if you need it you will get a spanking and neither one is on drugs or has ever been on drugs. There is a difference in spanking and beating. Beating is uncalled for. I feel (that we should be) bringing up children with love and showing them you really care about them, teaching them that if you do spank them it is because you love them and want them to learn right from wrong."

---

And Liz wrote:

"I hope that all of those who decide not to use corporal discipline with their children will not judge those of us who do according to stories such as these. I also am a psychologist with four very strong-willed children. Corporal punishment is used sparingly and only when done out of love, not anger. My children are not spanked in a public place and never will be. My children are not spanked when another form of discipline is more appropriate. My children are held and given loving touches after being spanked and talked to so they know they are loved and will be treated as a human being not like some unruly animal."

---

OK, here's the scoop:

Parenting & Family Topic of the Month:  My Holiday Thoughts

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah or Kwanzaa this time of year, the holidays are for kids ... the ones we gave birth to, the ones we parent, everyone else's and the kids who reside in all of us.

The holidays always fill me with a sense of joy, happiness and fun. Sure, shopping gets my heart pumped and everyone else seems to be a little nicer this time of year, but there's more to it than that. It seems the holidays inspire us to be our best selves, to accomplish an extraordinary amount of seemingly endless tasks without melting into the pavement like a freaky Halloween witch.

We buy special foods to create our own traditional feasts. We adorn our homes and work places with treasured holiday decorations. We send holiday greetings to people we care for. Our faces glow with extra
smiles for passersby and we are more inclined to offer a helping hand to a stranger struggling with shopping bags and toddlers in tow.

Life becomes a giant bubble of ... well, love. Yeah, that's it. Holidays inspire a little more love in our souls and there is nothing more precious.

I wish all of you a very special holiday season and as much extra love as you can handle. :-)

Tip or Trick of the Month: Snooze Patrol & Reader Gravy Tips

---

Snooze Alarm Control

Elaine sent this very clever tip that I might consider using myself:

"A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep when you hit the snooze button."

LOL Elaine. Love it!

---

Reader Gravy Tip

Deanna sent her own gravy tips to share:

"Use the potato water for your gravy. My mom said that all the nutrients from the potato are in the water they were cooked in. It does make your gravy taste just a little bit better. Also, if you want your gravy to be a nice rich brown color, just add a little bit of brewed coffee (not too much) to it. Does not change the flavor, just makes it a pretty brown color."

Thank you Deanna!

Time Waster of the Month:  Big Fish Games
Because life is supposed to be fun!

Take a load off your feet, relax and take a break from the pre-holiday rush with one of the best online game sites I've found in a long time.

Big Fish Games has a really fun, addictive "Dream Solitaire" that will keep you mesmerized for hours and their version of Mah Jong is outstanding, with lots of board variations. Their other games are winners, too, with super effects, sounds and graphics. Try "Word Wizard" for a brain challenge and "Fruits" for a fun twist on slots.

Click "online games" at the top of the page and go from there.

Definitely feed the kids first ...

--- Featured Site of the Month: Hugs & Hope Club

The volunteer members of the Hugs and Hope Club for Sick Kids are an important part of life for hundreds of critically ill children. They are ordinary people in communities all over America who encourage children who are battling for their lives, mailing hundreds of cheery cards and small gifts to help put smiles on the faces of suffering kids who might otherwise have little to smile about.

Hugs and Hope is sponsoring a special "Elf Project" for the holidays. Volunteer sponsors will be paired with a critically ill child for whom they shop and wrap gifts. Each elf provides not only Christmas gifts for their "adopted" child, but a little more love, joy, and hope in their lives as well.

You are invited to join the Elf Project and experience for yourself the joy of helping children. To volunteer, visit the Hugs and Hope website. Give a child and yourself a reason to smile this holiday season.
