Welcome all newcomers and faithful readers! Wow. It's been a full two months of relaxing and chaos here. A vacation from publishing this newsletter is slightly silly. Putting Rexanne's Web Review together each month isn't as stressful as having more time to find even more stressful things and events to dig into. ;-) I'm back and happy to be here. :-) How did everyone's summer go? Please share your stories!

Who's ready to jump into the next holiday fray? Halloween is just six short weeks away. Best get ready for it, starting now: Rexanne's Halloween

Some of you know I also work in the film business here in Los Angeles. My main focus is as a music supervisor, which means I find songs, composers and whatever type of music a film needs. I am insanely passionate about music and discovering as-yet unpublished songs gives me a big thrill. It's a good thing because sometimes I get buried in "listening" for a film, such as the last one I worked on which wrapped post production a few months ago, in which I  had to find, clear and license 38 "new" songs. While I am extremely proud of the soundtrack on this project I also had fun on the set of the movie and got to act in it! I enjoyed it a lot. All this is leading up to an offer for you to actually see and hear me perform in this film, right here online. The movie is a very fun romantic comedy titled "Yard Sale" You can visit the film's web site and and watch me in the trailer. I'm the lady who says: "It always amazes me how much baggage people collect over a lifetime" or something like that. ;-) Here's the link: Yard Sale Movie  Once there, click on "video" to see the trailer. Yard Sale will garner an "R" rating in theaters once it's released and the trailer has a few "off colored" words in it so make the kids leave the room first. ;-)

Lori wrote:

"I just read your spanking article-- Very good! Something you should add-- Shepherds do not hit their sheep with the rod--they use them as guides by placing them at their sides to direct them-- We are to guide and discipline our kids-- not hit, push and punish! Below is what a shepherd had to tell me:

'If I bopped my sheep with a rod they'd very quickly learn to avoid me like the plague, making rounding them up bloody difficult. Not only is this notion counter productive, it could also be very dangerous. For example, if you've accustomed yourself to moving your lambs around by hitting them, when your ram lambs grow up to be breeding rams they will (in Icelandic Sheep) top out at around 200 pounds with full racks of horns, usually with a double curl and pointed ends front. Trust me on this one ... not even a baseball bat wielded with great power is going to stop that ram from seriously injuring you if you've taught it that you hit. Because by the time you need to be able to stop that charging ram, he's
already used to being hit. So it won't be a surprise, he knows it is coming, and he's going to get you.'"

Amen to all of the above Lori. Explaining "the rod" as you and the shepherd did says what I've tried to say, only better. Thank you!

"My daughter from Va. was here visiting with her family and we all took a little trip to the Black Hills. This is the first time all of my 8 grandchildren have been together, so we all had a great time... It takes awhile for the music and slide show to start, so be patient. Hope you enjoy:  http://www.ziplo.com/SouthDakotaTrip.html"

What a trip! I fell in love with the buffalo that seemed to be hanging around their vehicle. And yes, Mount Rushmore is in the Black Hills. Deanna has a great picture of it on the slide show. :-) You'll also get to see Deanna's gorgeous family, which includes Deanna. ;-)

April wrote about Head Lice:

"I found a great product called a Robi-Comb. It combs through the hair (making a buzzing noise) and when it encounters a live lice it stops the noise. I was pretty amazed at how well it worked. I also foundthat the plastic combs included in the shampooing kits do not work on the eggs, only the dead lice. RID makes a stainless steel long tooth comb just for nits that works quite well."

Thank you April! Any help tips in the battle against Head Lice are invaluable!

And Lynda wrote about her battle and subsequent victory with those dreaded little vermin, head lice:

"The mayonnaise treatment is the miracle cure! We treated them with the mayo, wrapped their little heads in saran wrap for 2 hours, then shampooed and rinsed with vinegar, and I still cannot believe that it killed not only the live lice, but the nits as well! Yes...it actually kills the eggs! I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't experienced it myself. I was extra cautious for over a week, using a nit comb and poking through their scalps every night, but NO MORE LICE."

Eureka! We have a positive head lice story to report! Way to go, Lynda!

Parenting & Family Topic of the Month: Backpack Woes

If you're like me, you watch your children struggle with what seems like heavier-than-them backpacks to and from school and you feel helpless to assist in any way. You can't really carry the monolith of excess into class for them every day, can you? It seems they are dragging everything home from school that should be in left in their desks. I am less than tolerant about what I consider "too much" homework, however, this "weight" they're lugging around seems to be important and I stop myself from ranting about it to the teacher mainly to avoid being seen as "that confrontational mother" yet again. ;-) Hopefully, this new school year will yield answers if not less books our poor kids need to drag home.

Here is a very good article with excellent information and advice on children and back packs: The Problem with Backpacks
